Project Mission
Part documentary film, part collective journal, total time capsule, The Speedway Project is a multimedia project dedicated to preserving the memory of the Speedway Café, a small but mighty underground music venue that existed from 1986-1990 in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah.
In a time before cell phones or the internet, the Speedway Café captured lightning in a bottle and gave a voiceless generation a place to discover new music and new people and provided the backdrop as they came of age with such power that the reverberations continue today in the shaping of Salt Lake’s vibrant local art and music scene.
The Speedway Project connects directly with the community of the Speedway Café and weaves their individual stories into an enriched retelling of the times spent in this once brick-and-mortar establishment.
Through testimonials from devoted patrons and interviews with band members, club owners and local luminaries, we will discover the transformative impact this underground mecca had on the local scene and how it helped usher in the new sound of a generation worldwide.
